Andrew Mercieca

Who are you and what do you do?

My name is Andrew Mercieca, I have been with the company for going on ten years now, and I am a Senior Trading Team Leader in esports.

What initially drew you to Betway?

Back in the early 2010’s, betting companies were getting more and more popular, and I knew I wanted to get involved and work at one. I applied for a few, and Betway was one of the first to respond. As soon as I entered the office, saw what it looked like and saw how people were getting on and working with each other, I knew it would be a great place to work. Personally, I had been betting before I joined and knew that working in sports would be a great fit for me.

How has your career developed at Betway?

I started at Betway in an entry level position as a Bet Settlement Agent, which involved sorting out who won and lost after traders dropped the events. After a couple of years, I was moved up to Team Leader, which came with more responsibilities such as scheduling.

In around 2015, I joined the trading team. Traders are responsible for having the games on site and making sure our prices are up to date, ensuring we’re giving customers the best offers. A year after that, Betway then started offering esports as a product. We were one of the first companies to do so, and I was very eager to join the esports desk.

Since then, I have moved through the team from level one, two and three, up to senior and now I’m a senior team leader. I’m responsible for the junior level ones on the desk, and help them with their training, maintaining their growth and supporting their career aspirations.

What is a typical day at work like for you?

For us traders, we all work on shifts. To begin, I’ll check in with the previous shift and see if they have any notes they have to hand over. I’ll check what is going on for the day, update prices to see if anything needs to be changed, and see if any finals need to go live. I’ll be running reports to see where we’re making or losing money and seeing if any players are falling foul to betting integrity.

What makes Betway so special?

The people that work at Betway are second to none. Even though the pandemic has introduced our hybrid working system, coming into the office is always a motivating factor. How we’re set up in the office, it’s all free flowing, and everyone gets along with each other. The relationships you build with colleagues in and outside of your teams are very special, it’s such a fantastic group of people.

How does it feel to be a part of the Betway team?

I think it’s exciting! I’ve seen the company grow so much, and I know that there is still so much growth the company has in store! I’m very happy to be a part of that challenge. The more Betway grows, the more I grow! I get to learn new skills and work in new markets.

Can you list the most challenging but exciting aspects of your role?

New integrations. With the constant growth, we always have to update how we work. Integration can come with challenges, such as new developments, things being pushed back. But once you see a product live and set up, your job becomes so much easier. So, while the process can be a long one, once the challenges are out of the way, it becomes part of the daily routine, which is very rewarding.

Another new challenge for me is the team leader aspect of my role. I’m still learning about a variety of aspects of the role. We get exceptional training from HR (Human resources) and OD (Organisational Development), I‘m learning and I’m excited to work on and improve myself.

What 3 words would you use to describe Betway to potential new starters?

Everything is Possible!

I know I’m using one of the company values, but I truly believe Everything is Possible with Betway! As I’ve mentioned before, I joined Betway with pretty basic knowledge. There were sports that Betway offered that I had never heard of! But over the past ten years, I’ve learned so much, and I’m doing things I never thought I would be able to do. I’m coding into Excel, and I had no idea you could code ten years ago! The opportunities for growth and development are limitless.

You have 30 seconds, what makes working at Betway so good?

The team culture is amazing! While there is always work to be done, and once you have done your work you can always have fun with colleagues. Everyone that works here are fantastic workers, but they’re even better people! You can always find someone to have a chat with, get some advice, help, anything you need!
